Brand Storytelling in Asia | Part 2 of 3 — Premium & Luxury
For a mass-market brand, story and product can be two different things. But for a premium brand, that gap is fatal. The story isn't a wrapper on top of the product at a price point; the story ‘IS’ what's being sold.
Singapore Airlines figured this out in 1972, and it is worth noticing how deliberate the choice was. Every competitor at the time was advertising speed and engineering "the less time you spend with us, the better."
SIA chose the opposite: warmth, grace, hospitality, told through the now-iconic Singapore Girl. That was a risky bet for an airline from a market too small to survive on domestic flyers alone.
What has made it work for over five decades isn’t the sarong kebaya or the campaign films. It was that the promise got trained into everything downstream. How the crew are recruited and coached, the specific teas and wines chosen to feel familiar to a Fujian or Sydney traveller, the familiar briefing on board, the menu that changes by route. The brand story shows up as an operating standard, not just a marketing brief. That's why "premium" here doesn't feel performative, it is the truth the brand lives and breathes.
Contrast that with how easily a luxury story can come apart. A campaign built around decades of heritage, craftsmanship and personal attention sitting next to an aftersales experience that feels like any mass retailer's call centre. The customer is not disappointed by the product. She is disappointed that the story stopped being true the moment she needed it to hold.
That's the sharper edge premium and luxury brands live with a mass brand that under-delivers loses a transaction. A premium brand that under-delivers loses the very thing it charged a premium for. The promise that this, unlike the alternative, would be different.
**Up next in this series:** in the last part we look at banking and insurance in Asia. With categories where the brand promise is about something even harder to fake.

Our interactions with over 50 SMEs in the last couple of months has shed a light on this.
