Planners are Oddballs
It’s said that Bill Bernbach created an ad agency where misfits could not only survive but prosper. Chiat/Day’s “Think Different” campaign for Apple was launched with the words: ““Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes.”
Misfits make great planners and (qualitative) researchers. When you’ve spent your entire life feeling like you’re different and trying to understand why, when you instinctively get the idea of tribes and social norms because you operate outside them, this sets you up rather well to make a living from analysing people, society and culture.
Of course rather than becoming famous and revered like the people in the Apple ad, we'll always been on the outside looking in. We're good with that.
Not all of us are oddballs. But it helps.
